In order to take full advantage of your iOS device (iPad, iPhone or other like Apple device), you will need to create an Apple ID account. This account does a couple of things for you. For one, it allows you to download “apps” and content (such as books) from the iTunes store.

More importantly, your Apple ID can be used to share the content you acquire under that ID to other Apple devices. For example, if you have an iPad and an iPhone, if you download a book using one or the other, it will automatically appear on the other device (not only that – the devices will know what page you were last reading, so when you switch devices, the book will open up the right page). Up to 5 devices can “share” the single purchase of content, and it is all synchronized through the Apple ID you create.

When you set up your Apple ID, you’ll need to answer a number of security questions and you will also need to enter a credit card. You must do this, even if the content (apps, music, books, video, tv shows, whatever) is free.

The easier way to begin the creation of your Apple ID, is just go to the Apps Store and try to download anything. This will bring up the Apple ID questions. The first few screens will look like this.
